Area Information
Athenry lies 25 km to the east of Galway city, and is also famous for the song "The Fields of Athenry." One of the attractions of the town is its medieval castle. Grid reference: M 501 284. Named from the fact that a ford ('Áth') crossed the river Clare just east of the settlement. Because three kingdoms met at that point, it was called 'Áth na Ríogh', or 'the Ford of the Kings'. On some medieval maps of English origin the town is called Kingstown. The kingdoms were Hy-Many to the north-east, east and south-east; Aidhne to the south and south-west; Maigh Seola to the west and north-west.
* Athenry Castle - The three-storey tower, surrounded by defensive walls, is entered at first-floor level through an unusual decorated doorway. Athenry is one of the most notable medieval walled towns surviving in Ireland, owing its foundation to Meiler de Bermingham who built his Castle there c.1250.
* Athenry Heritage Centre - the town of Athenry retains many of its medieval buildings and features. The Heritage Centre brings this Medieval Town to life using models, storyboards and audio-visual touch screen to celebrate and interpret the town's medieval past. It is situated in the ruins of the Medieval St. Mary's Parish Church, in the centre of town.
* Moyode Castle - this was another tall Tower House of the Burkes, which went to the Persse family. The Burkes (de Burgo) were one of the Tribes of Galway. The castle is now restored and inhabited. Moyode Castle, a stunning example of a sixteenth-century fortified tower house located 3.5 miles from the town of Athenry.
* Kiltullagh Church - the Stations of the Cross in Kiltullagh Church were painted by the world famous artist Eva Hoan.
